Stanley Rutherford’s plays have been performed in San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, Toronto and Melbourne.

Chinese Art of Placement was the winner of the San Francisco Weekly’s "Black Box" award for best play, and was nominated for the Bay Area Critics Circle award for best new play; it was published in Plays from Woolly Mammoth. His play Billy Nobody was nominated for the Helen Hayes award for best new play. He has had staged readings for his plays at Lincoln Center Theatre and Second Stage in New York, Woolly Mammoth in D.C, and the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. Three of his plays — A Pencil for Miss Sapington, Walls of Glass, and Red Tulips were finalists at the Eugene O'Neill Playwright's Conference.
